Alerts.com Lands Sweet URL. Founder Inserts $1.2M First Funding

Bellevue, WA-based Alerts.com has raised $1.2M in financing from Monster Venture Partners plus angel investors. The concept is for cave-men. Any simpleton can set up alerts to let them know about about changes to sports scores, flight plans, stocks, etc. The techology back-bone is simple - they just use RSS....

I've Been Gnipped

Earlier this year we made a seed investment in a new company called Gnip.  Yesterday, Gnip launched their first service - a free centralized callback server that notifies data consumers (such as Plaxo) in real-time when there is new data about their users on various data producing sites (such as Flickr and Digg)....

How-to-Video's Graspr Raises $2.5M

We were prepared to dislike instructional video site Graspr. The startup made news as it raised $2.5M in Series A funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson plus angel investors. There are just umpteen instructional video sites that have been there done that. But we like the Graspr name and the video player is very well done....

But how many searches require a semantic feature? Not that many, which is why Powerset chose Wikipedia as a test for its technology....

Early Computer Animated Movies

I'm knee deep in reading The Pixar Touch: The Making of a Company, listening to Pink Floyd, and enjoying a perfect Homer, Alaska evening with Amy.  I was an undergraduate at MIT during the Lucasfilm days of what became Pixar and vaguely remember early Media Lab / Project Athena animation stuff and watching super cool computer graphics wizardry post-SIGGRAPHs at the Computer Museum in Boston....

The buzz around the mobile web these days is furious, spurred on by the web-friendly Apple iPhone and Google's forthcoming mobile operating system, Android. However, the state of mobile web traffic measurement is abysmal. To dig deeper into the state of web traffic analytics on the mobile web, VentureBeat's Matt Marshall will be moderating a [....

Penn National's Next Move

Some were surprised, but the deal that wouldn't die has finally left the building. But look at Penn National Gaming's stock. A failed merger usually doesn't garner a leap in share price to the tune of 10% plus. (Though considering the spread on this one, maybe.) But a fat $225 million breakup fee, plus Centerbridge and Fortress's [....

Talking with Tom Hicks

I spent some time on the phone yesterday with Tom Hicks, who burst back onto the buyout scene this week by agreeing to take Graham Packaging public via his SPAC. The deal is valued at $3.2 billion, with Graham owner Blackstone Group agreeing to remain the company's largest single shareholder for at least two years....
